OUR STORY

Sarawak ITPs

Samling is proud to have the first ITP with fully sustainable production in Malaysia to successfully obtain forest management certification under the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), endorsed by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The certified licensed planted forest (LPF) is located in Segan (Bintulu Division, Sarawak) and covers an area of 10,800 hectares.

We have eight active tree plantations in the state, and each plantation is supported by a nursery producing seedlings from our own improved genetic material. Having achieved certification of the Segan plantation, Samling is preparing its other forest plantations for SIRIM audits under MTCS. Our target is for each plantation to be certified before harvesting starts.

Over the past 13 years, Samling has developed its own in-house expertise to manage ITPs in Sarawak according to international best practices. There are now 23,000 hectares planted with well over 30 million trees-the majority of which comprises Acacia mangium, Acacia hybrid, Eucalyptus pellita, Gmelina arborea and Paraserianthes falcataria.

These species can be harvested between eight to 15 years after planting and our objective is to produce logs suitable for plywood and sawn timber. To meet growing needs from its downstream mills, Samling strives to increase supply from forest plantations while exploring opportunities to expand hectarage.

Downstream Timber Operations

Our products are developed to meet varying customer demands, which currently calls for converting logs into sawn timber, plywood and veneer. The group has timber production facilities for our downstream products which are located in Malaysia and China. Wood residue from our plywood and sawn timber operations are converted into panel products such as fibreboard and door facings. In addition, some of the wood residue are used as fuel for the generation of electricity in our power plants. The natural resource we manage is precious, and we make every effort to maximise the use and optimise the value of our resources.

Effort is also being put in to produce value-added products, such as flooring products, doors and furniture. The increased distribution networks offer synergistic advantages to the group as we aim to capture a bigger market share in wood and flooring products, as well as introduce the group's other products for sale to new and existing markets through these distribution channels.

The supply of logs in our manufacturing plants are mainly from our own forest concessions. In addition to these, logs from our plantation will be used in the future.

Acacia, The Versatile Plantation Timber

Plantation timber such as acacia is versatile and can be used in high-value end products. Acacia is ideal for furniture and building materials, both indoor and outdoor.

Samling has started the first harvesting cycle for its tree plantations in Sarawak which were  planted in early 2000s. All plantation logs are fully used, with close to zero waste, in the manufacture of sawn timber, plywood, furniture and furniture components, flooring, wall panels, door and window frames.

Our fibre board plant produces high quality door skins using small diameter and reject logs from the plantation together with offcuts and processing residues from the mills.

Samling Housing Products Sdn Bhd (SHP) manufactures high quality home furniture, from basic to ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture for convenience, and also flat-packed collections. Its furniture products are principally made for export markets, with major ones including Japan, United States, United Kingdom and Europe.

Our furniture collection offers functional styles and thoughtful designs to inspire living spaces that are beautifully livable. Living and dining areas to suit every taste, kitchens that are practical and nifty, and bedrooms you never want to leave. Only high quality natural materials are used and to top it up, our furniture is designed for easy assembly.
